Musbury’s History

From Iron Age hillfort to modern day village. From ancient ramparts, to Musberia, to Mount Drake, to the village we see today. This story has been told by a few including G P R Pulman in his ‘Book of the Axe’, but we need to write our own version. Some facts need updating and some correcting (i.e. in the case of the 1st Duke of Marlborough’s birth). It will also be nice to put our own ‘Musbury Heritage’ stamp on it!

It will make more sense if this is split into logical ‘eras’ for presentation on the website. Initially these are as follows: –

  • Early History
  • Tudors (1485–1603)
  • Stuarts (1603–1714)
  • Georgians (1714–1837)
  • Victorian/Edwardian Era (1838-1913)
  • The World Wars (1914-1945)
  • Modern History (1946 to date)

In time it may be more logical to follow the traditional periods of British history, as follows.

  • PREHISTORIC – Before 43AD
  • ROMAN – 43AD to approx 425AD
  • DARK AGES – From approx 425AD to 1066
  • MEDIEVAL – 1066 to 1485
  • TUDOR – 1485 to 1603
  • STUART – 1603 to 1714
  • GEORGIAN – 1714 to 1837
  • VICTORIAN – 1837 to 1901
  • EDWARDIAN – 1901 to 1914
  • MODERN 1 – 1914 to 1945
  • MODERN 2 – 1945 to 2000
